The Dimensional Railcar Operator ensures the safe loading, securement, transport, and unloading of dimensional freight from origin to destination. This role maintains continuous communication with the train engineer, walks railcars near route obstructions to verify clearance, and monitors loads, particularly on shiftable deck railcars. Responsibilities also include managing load and offload activities, overseeing contractors, and ensuring all operations meet company, customer, and regulatory standards.

 

Position Responsibilites:

 

  • Promote and model safe work practices in all activities
  • Operate specialized equipment safely and efficiently
  • Schedule and perform inspections to meet customer requirements
  • Ensure safe transport of loads from origin to destination, maintaining constant communication with the train engineer
  • Walk railcars when approaching obstructions (e.g., tunnels, curves) to verify safe clearance
  • Monitor loads through obstructions, including shiftable deck railcars
  • Inspect railcars/trailers for quality, compliance, and required modifications
  • Oversee and direct contractors and company personnel
  • Ensure proper loading and securement of freight for transport
  • Travel with shipments (including riding in designated railcars) to monitor load integrity
  • Oversee offloading and ensure railcars are cleaned and ready for reuse
  • Review railroad orders and prepare for route-specific constraints
  • Maintain radio communication with train personnel
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
